About Thomas Standen
He and his wife Mary Ann had at least eight children, four of whom died either in early childhood or in their early twenties. All of the children except for Jonathan, for whom no records have yet surfaced, were baptised George Yard Chapel Broadway (Formerly White Horse) Hammersmith Presbyterian Church, Hammersmith, London, England. He appears to have been the only Standen to be living in Hammersmith at the time. On a marriage record between Thomas Standen and Mary Ann Aldridge 12 Jul 1803 at St Paul's Deptford it states that while she comes from this parish he is from Hammersmith. It is therefore a reasonable bet that Mary Ann Aldridge was his wife, all the records for their children state that the wife's name is Mary Ann and the first record of a child being born to them is about a year after the marriage. It is still unclear when he emigrated to South Africa but it would have been after 1821 as his youngest daughter was baptised in Hammersmith. It is also not clear yet where and when his wife died.
