Biography

Hon. Thomas Steere, son of John Sr. and Hannah (Wickenden) Steere, of Providence, Rhode Island was probably their second son but the date of his birth has not been ascertained. [1][2]

1696: November 7: His father John deeded Thomas 40 acres for 'fatherly love and natural affection. [1] [2]
1701: May 6: Made a freeman. [2]
1702: December 10: Thomas bought 10 acres of Richard Arnold at Providence. [1] [2]
1710: His brother John deeded Thomas 10 acres. [2]
1712: March 6: Deeded land in Providence on both sides of the river by his brothers-in-law, Richard, John and Thomas Arnold, with corn and saw mills. [1] [2]
1711/2: March 13: For a 'valuable sum of money' his father deeded Thomas one full right to the thatch bed's at Hawking's Cove. [2]
1715: Served as Deputy in the General Assembly. [1] [2]
1718: He bought additional land at Providence from his father. [2]
1721/2: He bought right to the original forty acre division of Thomas Olney Sr. [2]
1722: Bought another 31 acres of his father's land. [2]
1723: He bought another tract of land adjoining his property from his brother William. [2]
1723: Purchased 40 acres from William Gully. [2]
1724: December 1: Thomas was administrator of his father's estate. [1]
1726: April 21: He purchased 25 acres of the second forty acre division and 4 acres of the cedar swamp from Roger Williams. [2]
1726: Thomas purchased additional land of William Coman. [2]
1731: March 17: Member for the first council to represent the new town of Smithfield. [2]
1734: Served on the Smithfield town council. [1] [2]
1732: June 5: Deeded his son Richard 160 acres at Glocester. [1]
His first wife was Mary Arnold, daughter of Richard and Mary (Angell) Arnold. Her date of death is unknown. [1] [2]

Her father Richard Arnold left one half of his mills at Nissatasket to his son-in-law Thomas Steere. [2]

They had five children:

Phebe, [1]born about 1698; married ___ Mathewson, (probably ?Daniel" son of James and Elizabeth (Clemence) Mathewson, who was born on October 6, 1700. He married second Amy, who survived him. He died December 16, 1751.) [2]
Elisha, born about 1700; died unmarried July 19, 1731, administration being given to his brother Thomas. [1] [2]
Mary, born about 1702 [1]; died on January 2, 1776, in her seventy fifth year at Smithfield; married Daniel Mowry, son of Capt. Joseph and Alice (Whipple) Mowry on April 4, 1722. [3] [2]
Thomas, born on October 9, 1704 [1]; married first, Katherine Comstock at Smithfield on May 16, 1736; married second, Mercy/Mary Aldrich on December 26, 1754. [3][2]
Richard [1], born on June 3, 1707; died October 16, 1797 at Glocester; married first, Anna Comstock at Glocester in February, 1730; married second Jane Aldrich on April 27, 1735. [4][3] [2]
He married second Mehitable, widow of Samuel Plummer. She was born on June 1, 1692, daughter of Richard and Mary Evans. They had no children. [1]

Thomas Steere died August 27, 1735 at Smithfield. The inventory of his estate was valued at L923 11s 6d.[3][1] [2]

In his will written on August 22, 1735, he names:
