Thomas John Tew, Jr

Thomas John Tew , son of Thomas Tew (1804 - 1888) and Hannah Smith Tew (1811 - 1881), was born 27 June 1833 at Birmingham, West Midlands, England. He came to Utah on 30 August 1851 with an independent company.

Thomas Tew married Rebecca Bird, daughter of John Bird and Ann Russen, pioneers of 1855, on 22 January 1856 at Springville, Utah County, Utah Territory. She was born 28 October 1838 at Yardley, near Birmingham, England. They had nine children, two sons and seven daughters.

Their children were:

1. Eliza Rebecca Tew (1857 - 1953) married John Mendenhall on 24 April 1879
2. William Thomas Tew (1859 - 1933) married Clara Elizabeth Snow on 31 January 1884
3. Lorinda Ann Tew (1861 - 1890) married Joseph Alonzo Reynolds on 15 January 1880
4. Julia Adelaide Tew (1864 - 1864) died in infancy
5. Annabelle Tew (1865 - 1947) married Charles D. Evans on 9 February 1887
6. John Henry Tew (1868 - 1948) married Emma Leona Bulkley on 2 January 1890
7. Cora Ellen Tew (1871 - 1908) married John P. Anderson on 7 January 1901
8. Melvina Tew (born 14 Feb 1874) married John S. Smith on 7 November 1912
9. Erma Dell Tew (born 24 September 1880), married Arville Leroy Titus on 9 February 1901

Thomas Tew served as a Latter-day Saint missionary to England 1882-1884. He was a veteran of the Walker Indian War. A mechanic, he settled at Springville in 1862; moved to Paris, Idaho in 1865; to Richmond, Cache County, Utah Territory in 1868; and back to Springville, Utah Territory in 1872. He died on 6 August 1906 at Springville, Utah County, Utah, United States, at the age of 71.
