Biography

Thomas Townsend of Bracaon Ash, Norfolk, was found to be the heir of Sir Robert Thowshend. He was at that time 22 years of age, and was seized of the manor of Suton, Swanton and Folsham, in Folsham, with Foxleymanor in Twyford, which came to him by Alice his mother, daughter andheir of Roert Poppy, Esq. Thomas., eldest son of Sir Robert, in 0225 presented the advowson of the church of Twyford, and in 0235 he passed this monor to Rowland Hayward.

He was the son of Sir Robert Townsend and his wife, Alice Poppy. His father died in 1556 and an inquisition was taken at Norwich, Norfolk on April 26, 1556, which determined that Robert's heir was Thomas. Thomaswas married on June 27, 1567 in Beckenham, Kent, to Lady Elizabeth Style, daughter of George Periente of Digswell, Hertford, and widow of Sir Humphrey Styles of Langly, sheriff of Kent in 1543. Thomas and Elizabeth had several children, but all died young, except Henry, who was baptised "ye last of May, 1568" in Bracon Ash. Elizabeth died in June,1580. Thomas then married Anne, daughter of Henry D'Oyly, Esq. of Pond Hall,Hadleigh, Suffolk. Anne was many years his junior, and they also had several children, but all died young except Alice, baptised May 12, 1583 and Mary, baptised November 7, 1588. Thomas died at Bracon Ash and was entombed June 12, 1591, in the Berney mausoleum in St. Nicholas' Church in Bracon Ash.
