Biography
Parentage; Date and Place of Birth
Thomas Webster, son of Thomas Webster and Sarah (Brewer) Webster, was born on January 20, 1664/5 in Hampton in what is now New Hampshire (while Hampton was still governed by the Massachusetts Bay Colony).[1][2]
Marriage
Thomas married a woman named Sarah. Her first name is established by the records of the birth of their children. As discussed in Sarah's profile, while it has been suggested that she might have been the daughter of John Godfrey, no reliable evidence supporting that theory has ever been found. Based on the date of birth of their first child, they were probably married in 1689. Since Thomas lived in Hampton and Thomas and Sarah continued to live there after their marriage, it is probable that they were married in or near Hampton.
Children
Thomas and Sarah had the following children:
Sarah, b. September 15, 1690 in Hampton,[3] m. Samuel Fellows on November 14, 1710[4][2]
Thomas, b. about 1693, m. 1st Mary Greely on June 19, 1717,[3] 2d Elizabeth (Ladd) Sanborn,[4][2] d. May 13, 1772 in Kingston[3]
Mary, b. May 19, 1696 in Hampton,[5][4][2] m. John Fifield on August 16, 1716[4][2]
Alice, b. August 5, 1698 in Hampton[6][3][4][2]
Benjamin, b. August 24, 1701 in Kingston,[7][3] m. 1st Elizabeth Stuart on February 1, 1725/6,[3] 2d Mary Stanian on December 1, 1737[3][4]
Joshua, b. September 2, 1703 in Kingston,[8][3] m. Abigail (Waldron?)[4][2]
Abigail, b. April 15, 1706 in Kingston,[9][3] m. David Quimby on December 25, 1724[3][4][2]
Samuel, b. April 3, 1708 in Kingston,[10][3][4][2] m 1st February 25, 1732/3 Elizabeth Burnham at Ipswich,[3][4][2] 2d June 11, 1740 Dorothy Stanian[3][4][2]
Elizabeth, b. January 11, 1710 in Kingston,[11][3][2] m. April 20, 1730 Josiah Fowler[3]
The profile for Thomas in Dow's History of the Town of Hampton incorrectly shows that this profile's Thomas Webster was the father of Deborah Webster who married Zebulon Giddings in Exeter in 1724.[12] Deborah was, in fact, the daughter of Thomas Webster of Exeter.
Residency in Hampton and Kingston
Based on records relating to his father, Thomas lived his entire life as a youth in Hampton, New Hampshire.[13]
Based on records of the births of their children, after their marriage about 1689, Thomas and his wife Sarah resided in Hampton until sometime in 1698-1701.
Thomas, as well as his brothers Israel and John, served as soldiers under Captain John Woodman at Oyster River for about 10 days in October 1694.[14] Thomas also served in 1696 under Capt. Henry Dow at Daniel Tilton's garrison.[15]
Thomas and his brother Ebenezer were among the original proprietors of the town of Kingston. They were among the 16 men named in the original charter for the town granted on August 6, 1694 by the Province of New Hampshire.[16][17] On December 19, 1700, they received grants of land and, in 1701, they were among the 8 men described as "the first settlers" who received houselots and meadow grants.[17] Thomas settled on "the Plains" in Kingston.[18] Based on the birth records of his children, he moved from Hampton to Kingston sometime in 1698-1701.
In 1709, Thomas became the second man licensed to keep a tavern in Kingston.[19]
Thomas was among 9 persons dismissed by the Hampton church on September 5, 1725 in order to join the new church at Kingston.[20]
Death
Thomas Webster died in Kingston, Province of New Hampshire on March 7, 1733, "an aged man who fell dead in the street."[3][4]
