That census likewise noted Thomas Henry, his wife Elizabeth Winston (Brown), and their daughter Martha Elizabeth Winston, lived next door to his dad, Thomas B. Winston, and his brother, Robert Lee Winston. According to a record from Ancestry.com, he married Elizabeth Brown just miles from the outskirts of Hanover County, in Richmond, Virginia. The date of his marriage to Elizabeth was December 26, 1878. The record of this marriage placed his year of birth in 1855.
0in; margin-bottom: .0001pt; text-align: justify; background: white;">
"font-size: 12.0pt; font-family: 'Helvetica',sans-serif; mso-fareast-font-family: 'Times New Roman'; color: #105a83; border: none windowtext 1.0pt; mso-border-alt: none windowtext 0in; padding: 0in;">Sometime after June 4, 1880 Elizabeth passed.[1] On February 3, 1883 Thomas Henry married Mary (J.) Pelham, sometimes spelled "Pellum" in vital records. For a period following this marriage he, Mary, and their daughter Jesse, born months before their marriage, lived in Richmond, Virginia.
gn: justify; background: white;">A U.S. Census conducted on June 1, 1900 establishes he and Mary resided at 1203 N. First Street in Richmond, Virginia. This census listed his trade as a wheelwright. The census taker scribed their daughter Jesse was 16 and their son, Thomas Osbey Winston, was 2 years old. His son's age was incorrect by roughly two years. Thomas Osbey was born in 1896 according to Thomas Osbey's military records. The census taker conducting this census in 1900 erroneously scribed Thomas Osbey’s middle initial as A, the O in Osbey likely sounding like an A to the census taker or enumerator.
ottom-alt: auto; text-align: justify; background: white;">City directories of Richmond, Virginia published near the time this census was taken disclose Thomas Henry advertised a wheelwright and blacksmith business. The address of his business was703 N. 6th Street. It was located in downtown Richmond, approximately twenty minutes from his home. He moved his family to Phoebus, Elizabeth City, Virginia (now Hampton, VA) in the early 1900's. City directories of Phoebus disclose he continued to advertise his blacksmith and wheelwright business.
d: white;">
-fareast-font-family: 'Times New Roman'; color: #105a83; border: none windowtext 1.0pt; mso-border-alt: none windowtext 0in; padding: 0in;">A death record establishes his daughter Jesse died in Richmond, Virginia on February 27, 1907. She was 23 or so. A few years later his wife Mary died in Phoebus, Virginia. Her date of death was January 27, 1913. The cause of her death was chronic bronchopneumonia. Thomas Henry was the informant for her death certificate.
top-alt: auto; mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto; text-align: justify; background: white;">After Mary’s death Thomas Henry and his son Thomas Osbey continued to live in Phoebus, Virginia. His blacksmith and wheelwright business was located roughly two to three hundred feet from his home's address of 107 E. County Street, Phoebus. His shop’s address was 119 E. County Street. His name and trade, including his business address, appeared in the Phoebus Business Directory at this time. The address of 107 E. County Street, Phoebus, Virginia, was listed as his and his son's address when Thomas Osbey filled out a WWI enlistment and assignment card in April of 1918. In completing this card his son wrote "Thomas H. Winston" was his father and provided the address of 107 E. County Street, Phoebus as their home address.
: white;">Thomas Henry died on March 13, 1920. Just nine days earlier a U.S. census conducted on March 4, 1920 indicated he still maintained his own shop. His place of death was Phoebus, Elizabeth City, Virginia. The informant of his death certificate was his brother, Robert Winston.
white;">
reast-font-family: 'Times New Roman'; color: #105a83; border: none windowtext 1.0pt; mso-border-alt: none windowtext 0in; padding: 0in;">According to Thomas Henry's death certificate, he died following a period of unconsciousness attributable to a cerebral hemorrhage or stroke, listed as apoplexy in his death certificate. This certificate indicated he endured this condition from March 8th to March13th and was buried at Elmerton Cemetery in Hampton, Virginia on the 16th. At the time of his death, he was survived by his son who lived with his newly wedded wife, Ida Winston, in Steubenville, Ohio. Months after Thomas Henry’s death his grandson, Thomas David Winston, was born from the union of his son's marriage to Ida. Thomas David was born on June 19, 1920.
background: white;">
0in; margin-bottom: .0001pt; text-align: justify; background: white;">
"font-size: 12.0pt; font-family: 'Helvetica',sans-serif; mso-fareast-font-family: 'Times New Roman'; color: black;">[1] The records are not clear the cessation of his marriage with Elizabeth was due to her death. What supports a determination Elizabeth had passed is the record of his marriage to Mary J. Pelham in 1883. That record notes he was single at the time and referenced a widowed status.
ite;">
ext-align: justify; background: white;">
nt-family: 'Times New Roman'; color: black;">
und: white;">
