The tree here suggests he is the son of Sir John Berners, but that would require him to be born after his "father" had died, the now known dates suggest a missing generation or two:

Another tree states that the above Sir John Berners' grandson Sir James Berners had a son William Berners who is said to be the "ancestor of the Bernerses, of Finchinfield [sic], Essex." This and the time period they lived in would suggest that this Thomas Barnes is the son of that William Berners.
