Biography

Timothy was born either in 1680 or 1681, either at Marshfield or Tiverton, both in Plymouth Colony (see Research Notes). He was the son of Josiah and Mary Closson.[1] [2]

He married Martha Wilbor (1684-abt.1746) on 16 Jun 1702.[3]

He was probably less than 30 years old when he passed away after 1704 since his second son Timothy Closson (1705-aft.1774) was born 1705, and before 1708 when his wife had her son Joseph Burgess (1708-1768) with her second husband Thomas Burgess III (1668-1743).

Research Notes

Conflicted Birth Dates and Places: Timothy's parents were married in Marshfield, Plymouth Colony, and he may have been born in Marshfield before moving to Tiverton where Timothy's siblings were born: [4]

"thy the Son of Josiah Clawson" (possibly named Timothy) "Borne the 5th of January 1680", at Marshfield.
Plymouth Colony and Bristol County: In 1685, when the division was made of Plymouth Colony, Bristol County had the towns of Taunton, Rehoboth, Dartmouth, Swansea, Bristol, Tiverton, Little Compton, Freetown and the plantations of Cumberland Gore and Attleboro. Little Compton’s name and land area were unchanged.

In 1691, Little Compton as part of the original settlement of Plymouth Colony merges with Massachusetts Bay Colony, et al. to form the Province of Massachusetts Bay. [Plymouth Colony existed without a formal charter since it’s founding, as the Pilgrim’s were originally chartered for a destination in the Hudson River (New York) area.]

By 1747, Little Compton along with Tiverton secured their own royal decree, were incorporated, and annexed to Newport County as a part of Rhode Island along with Bristol. Because Little Compton was once part of the Plymouth Colony, all probate and land records prior to 1746 can be found in Taunton and New Bedford.
