Note: There appear to be some anomalies in the records relating to Timothy Devine. The 1820Setllers.com web site indicates that he was born in 1786 and died in 1865, and that he was married to Eleanor Devine. It also indicates that they had four children, namely John, Bridget, Jeremiah and Catherine.
However, a gravestone with Timothy's name on it, which also gives Eleanor's name, indicates that he died in 1888 at the age of 80 (giving a birth date of 1808). This could, of course, just be a transcription error, but there are records in the NAAIRS RSA database (see 'Sources' above) which show that there was a Timothy Devine still alive in the 1880s. This points to the possibility that there were two Timothy Devines (perhaps father and son), but this has yet to be verified.
In fact, two death notice numbers are given in Timothy's profile on the South African Settlers web site (http://www.southafricansettlers.com/?cat=14&paged=25) i.e. DN 2044/1865, DN 3419/1876, which again seems to indicate that there were two Timothys.
The National Archives of South Africa's NAAIRS RSA database (http://www.national.archsrch.gov.za/sm300cv/smws/sm300ds?2013030609...) seems to indicate that there were indeed three Timothy Devines. Various death and distribution account records occur there, which give the following information:
- Timothy Devine d. 1865 (Inventory and Appraisment Account dated 1865; Distribution Account dated 1866). As this record coincides with the death date given in various sources, this probably refers to the distribution of a deceased estate.
- Timothy Devine d. 1886 (Various Distribution Accounts dated from 1886 to 1892). These obviously couldn't relate to the 'first' Timothy, as he died in 1865.
- Timothy Devine d. 1945, married to Mary Devine (Cronin) (Death Notice dated 1945)
