About Timothy Tynes

Some claim that Timothy was a son of Robert Fleming Tynes. Walter Edwin Tynes states that Robert Fleming Tynes had four sons, but only three appear in his succession records-Timothy might be the fourth. the fact that Timothy named four of his sons William, Samuel, John and Fleming suggests some close relationship to that family. However, no hard proof of any kind exists concerning Timothy's parentage. My guess is that he was the son of either Samuel Tynes or John Tynes (two of Robert Fleming Tynes' brothers).

A Timothy Tynes appears in Southampton County, Virginia, in the 1810 census, aged 26-45, with a wife and two sons under ten. Our Timothy would have been 22 then, so the match is not perfect, but it's a possibility. On the other hand, all of Timothy's children who were alive for the 1880 census said their father was born in South Carolina. That, plus the naming pattern mentioned above, strongly suggest that Timothy was a grandson of William Tynes (d. 1761 in Granville County, North Carolina).

He obtained a land patent in Conecuh County, Alabama, on 10 November 1824, and another on 25 Jun 1825. If the ages and birth dates of Timothy's children are accurately reported on the 1850 census, then Timothy, his wife and son Orlando would have moved from South Carolina to Alabama before 1829. Timothy and his first wife appear on the 1830 and 1840 censuses in Conecuh County. These family configurations suggest that they may have had an older boy (about Orland's age) and a young girl (born (1835-1840), neither of whom is accounted for on the 1850 census.

By 1850, Timothy and Margaret were in Butler County, Alabama, where they remained until his death in 1869. Margaret then joined several of her children and step-children in Sabine Parish, Louisiana.

Timothy's widow, Margaret Gipson Tynes, filed for a pension based on Timothy's service in the War of 1812. She stated that Timothy had been a private in Beal's Company of the Tennessee Militia. This suggests that he might not have been born in South Carolina, as the 1850 census states, but might have come from Virginia, as several other Tennessee Tyneses did.
