Eliza Willis accompanied her brother Timothy to Australia. They set sail for Australia on 12 May 1839 on the “Cornwall” which carried 374 emigrants and 55 officers and crew. Timothy and Eliza were amongst the last to emigrate under a scheme financed by the British Government. Their port of embarkment was Gravesend (near London) on the River Thames. The voyage to Australia took 112 days, the route covering more than 13000 nautical miles. The “Cornwall” arrived in Port Jacksonon 1 Sept 1839. At that time Sydney had a population of just over 80,000, with half of those being convicts or their descendants.
