Richard like his father became a rector. He therefore studied at Oxford university. Where he obtained his B.A; M.A; and DD degrees. Now while he was in Oxford studying he obviously met his future wife a Lettice Gough born in 1611 to a William Gough born 1581, in Upper Heyford, Souldern, Oxfordshire.,ho was a tailor by profession and, his wife a Joan Couthwell.

In the margin of the original record beside this wedding is a note, 'son of the rector:' Richard senior, is known to have officiated at this wedding.
