About Todros Yakil Ticktin (Tyckocinsky)

Eulogy R. Todros Yokil ben R. Moshe Nachum Ticktin from “Havatzelet” 1900 translated from Hebrew by R. Avraham Goldberg, Jerusalem

The rabbi, the gaon, the charif (sharp) from a long line of prominent rabbis, Todros Yokil Ticktin of blessed memory went to his resting place and today is his “shloshim” (30 days after his burial). He was niftar on the eve of Rosh Hashana after midnight.

As I am a close relative of his I am writing this article in the journal “Havatzelet” so that those who come after us will know that we were not lacking in outstanding people.

R. Todros Yokil was born in Kalvarija in the province of Suwalki to the gaon, Rabbi Moshe Nachum Ticktin of blessed memory, who was also laid to rest here in Jerusalem on the Mt. of Olives. R. Moshe Nachum was the grandson of the gaon, the great Torah leader, Rabbi Yokil Ticktin who was head of the rabbinical court (ABD) in Vilkaviskis in Poland. (Today Vilkaviskis is in Lithuania) and who was descended from the outstanding gaon and man of G-d, Rabbi Moshe Yehoshua Horwitz who was ABD of Grodno and who was from the family of our teacher and great light the Ramo, Rabbi Moshe Isserles of blessed memory.

The mother of R. Todros Yokil was Marat Ita Chenya the modest and great lady who was the daughter of the Gaon, R. Chaim Cohen from Kalvarija. (R. Chaim Cohen was also the father and teacher of R. Moshe Leib Cahana who was the father of the author of this article). R. Moshe Leib Cahana of blessed memory lies buried in this holy city, Jerusalem and he was the grandson of the gaon Rabenu Shimshon HaCohen who was called Rabbi Shimshon Cohen the gadol (great) and also from the descendants of the last ABD of Vilna, Rabbi Shmuel. of blessed memory and also from the descendants of the man of G-d, the author of “Seder Hadorot” (R. Yechiel ben Shlomo Heilprin).

R. Todros Yokil’s father the rabbi and gaon Moshe Nachum Ticktin of blessed memory educated him in Torah and to be G-d fearing and when he was still a lad he was already known and quite famous as being exceptional. This departed person did not brag about his outstanding abilities and he kept far away from a formal rabbinical position, but towards the end of his life when he was not particularly successful (presumably at making a living) and also a lot of people pressured him, he traveled far to the land of America to take up a rabbinic position and he served nobly a community in Chicago and was very much accepted and liked by all the different divisions and parties in town. However, his love for Zion in which he very much excelled caused him eventually to leave the position and to come and live in the Holy Land where he passed away at a very old age and was buried on the slopes of the Mt. of Olives where his father is also buried, the Gaon the descendants of great yachas, Rabbi Moshe Nachum Ticktin And the Almighty should send His comfort to all those mourning for him and his great family in Israel. May his soul be bound with the souls of the living.

This was written by Rabbi Eliyahu Aharon son of Rabbi Moshe Leib Cahana of blessed memory.
