About Toto, Chief of Hawaiki
Toto felled a great tree near the Waiharakeke River which split into two halves, and from these he had hewn two great canoes, AOTEA and MATAHOURA. Toto gave AOTEA to Turi and Rongorongo in return for an elaborate dog skin cloak named Pōtaka-tāwhiti. Tautahi names the dogs as Potaka-tawhiti, Kakariki-tawhiti, Whakapapa-tuakura, Matawari-te-huia, Pukeko-whata-rangi, Miti-mai-te-rangi, Nuku-te-apiapi and Miti-mai-te-paru. MATAWHAOURA, the sister canoe of AOTEA, was destined, appropriately, for Kuramārōtini the sister of Rongorongo and wife of Kupe.
