from Find A Grave Memorial# 25250070

Tristram Fauntleroy was a son [SIC: Brother] of John Fauntleroy (1416-, Seigneur of Haudois, and grandson [SIC: son] of John Fauntleroy (d. 1440) and his wife Joan le Walleys, daughter of Sir John le Walleys of Langton Walleys. Tristram's wife's name was Johan (Joan). Some believe she was Joan de Stourton, but it is more likely that he married Joan Holt, daughter of John Holt, and widow of Thomas Villiers, per his coat of arms.

Tristram was educated at Oxford, and was a Doctor of Law (thus the title "Master," ie: Master in Chancery). He lived at Michelmarsh Manor. He had two sons, John and Bryan Fauntleroy.

The inscription on the tombstone reads: "Here lyet Master Trustram Fantleroy squyre and Johan hys wyfe whych Trustram was buryed The XV day of August the yere of owr Lorde God MCCCCCXXX and VIII. Whos love God ---." The last word, which has been obliterated, is thought to have been P'DN, for pardon.

There is said to be a depiction of Tristram in a stained glass window in the church. Pictures of the church and of his tombstone can be found at:

Notes

from http://www.celtic-casimir.com/webtree/2/1455.htm

Sources differ as to the wife of Tristram Fauntleroy. Most show her as Joan, daughter of Sir William Stourton, 2nd Baron Stourton, and Margaret Chidioke. Other show her as Joan, daughter of John Holt, and widow of Robert Viliers of Crondal. Note, however, that in the will of Sir Edward Stourton (1539), son of the abovementioned William and Margaret, we find the following:

'to my brother Tristram Fawnderoye thre pounde six shillinges and Eight pence, a golde ringe w' the Fawkens hedd sett yn hyme.'

By the term 'brother' I presume is meant 'brother-in-law' and, as such, lends support to Tristram's [first] wife being Joan Stourton.

Tristram Fauntleroy died in 1538 at the “Priory,” a short distance from Michel Marsh Church given to him for his services to Henry VIII in the settlements of church and state during the Reformation. He was master and squire of the Manor of Michel Marsh Church, one of the oldest in England.

Note that in Feet of Fines, dated one month from St Michael, 9 Henry VII [27 October 1493], a Tristram Fauntleroy appears with his wife Isabel. Presumably this is Tristram's uncle of the same name.

  • Tristram was born about 1470 in Mitchell's Marsh, Dorset, England. Tristram's father was John Fauntleroy and his mother was Joan le Waleys. He had a sister named Agnes. He was the younger of the two children. He died about 1539. He was buried in Michel Marsh Church, Hants, England.General *Notes
  • He lived in Michelmarsh Manor House, and was educated at Oxford "Master of Chancery" (Doctor of Law).
  • Tristram's father was John Fauntleroy. His mother was either John's first wife, Joan le Waleys, or John's second wife, Elizabeth Wadham.
  • Henry VII restored the Haudois estate on the Isle of Jersey to Tristram's father John Fauntleroy as heir and next of kin to Geoffrey Le Waleys who was killed in the battle of Barnet in 1471.
  • From Helen Sherman:
  • My cousin sent me a copy of "The Fauntleroy Family" by Robert H. Fauntleroy in which he states, "During the restoration of Michelmarsh Church about 1896, two stone slabs were discovered which came from the tomb of Tristram Fauntleroy,... One of them shows his Fauntelroy coat of arms impaling that of Holt. This clearly proves that Tristram married a Holt, and not Joan Stourton, as has been stated in some accounts of the family." He goes on to say that Joan Holt was the daughter of John Holt, widow of Thomas Villiers. Tristram Fauntleroy & Joan Holt had two sons, Bryan and John.
  • I don't know whether this clearly proves anything, and it would certainly be reasonable for Tristram to marry twice, and even have more offspring. No birth dates from either Bryan or John given either...
  • Incidentally, there is a wonderful picture of Tristram Fauntleroy from a stained glass window at Michelmarsh Church. When I told my brother that it was his 11th g.grandfather, he said, "I thought there was a family resemblance." !!! Oh, my!!

  • His will is dated 25 July 1539.
