About Trooper Henry Thomas Chipper

Henry Thomas Chipper was born at Kataaning in Western Australia in 1893 (ref: 1185). His parents were Henry Charles and Emily Louisa Chipper (nee Smith) who married in Perth in 1885. Henry worked as a fireman before he enlisted in World War I on 14 January 1915 from Blackboy Hill in Western Australia at the age of forty-two. He served with the 10th Australian Light Horse Regiment (1 to 14 Reinforcements February 1915 - February 1916).

He embarked on 19 April 1915 from Fremantle, Western Australia, aboard the HMAT Argyllshire A8. He was killed in action at Gallipoli on 7 August 1915 during the Battle of the Nek. Perth's Western Mail reported his death on 3 September 1915: CHIPPER. - Killed in action, at the Dardanelles, on August 7, 1915, Harry, third son of Mrs. E. L. Chipper, 135 Lincoln street, Perth (late of Katanning), and brother of Marley, Arthur, and Muriel Chipper, age 22 years.

Henry's listing in Australia's Fighting Sons of the Empire: Portraits and Biographies of Australians in the Great War records: Trooper HENRY THOMAS CHIPPER. Trooper Henry Thomas Chipper (860), 27 years of age, was born and eduated at Katanning. He enlisted early in January, 1915, and went into Blackboy Camp. He embarked on the 19th April, 1915, on the troopship Argyleshire with the 4th Reinforcements of the 10th Light Horse. He arrived at Heliopolis on the 13th May, and left for Gallipoli about a fortnight later. he was killed in action at Walkers Ridge on the 7th August, 1915.

Henry's final resting place is unknown. He is remembered on the Lone Pine Memorial on the Gallipoli Peninsula in Turkey (Panel 10).
