About Tun Yusof bin Ishak (First President of Singapore)
Yusof Ishak was the founder and editor of Utusan Melayu, the influential newspaper in Bahasa Melayu published in Singapore during the end of British rule in the region. He played a very significant role prior to the independence of Singapore and during the early years.
He was appointed Yang di-Pertua Negara of Singapore on December 3 1959. With the separation of Singapore from Malaysia on August 9 1965, Tun Yusof Ishak became in effect the First President of Singapore. He remained in that post until his death on November 23 1970.
