About Uchthred

This Uchtred, great grandson of Uhtred the Bold, Earl of Northumbria, may be one of the Uchtreds listed in Domesday. The Arkil family with descent from the Bold appear in Domesday as holding manors in North Yorkshire (Sutton: held by Gospatric FitzArkil and Uchtred; Ingthorpe: Ketil and Uchtred). These thanes of Arkil were 1st cousins. They had a nephew named Uchtred but he appears to have been too young to be in Domesday of 1086. The family also held manors, seen in Domesday, in North Riding, Yorkshire listed with thanes Gamel and Uchtred at Brotten, Dalton, Aughton, Lathom, and Kirkby by Middlesborough.

On the other hand, the other Uchtred who was a grandson of Uhtred the Bold, but through Gospatrick b997, is recorded in Domesday holding Manors on or near the west coast of Lancashire at North Meolis, Aghton, the Hundred of West Derby that is near Liverpool, plus after Uchtred's descendants recovered holdings from the Earl of Tostig in Amounderness which the Singletons had held as ancient Lords, they then held as thanes the manors on the north bank of the River Ribble at Brockholes, Broughton, Scales, Staining, also at Goosnargh and the sergeanty of the Wapentake of Little Singleton which gave them the office of Bailiffs of Amounderness from after 1100ad for the next 200 years. In 1260 Alan de Singleton built Singleton (Chingle) Hall on the Goosnargh land.

Further research in the Domesday Book for the period of 1066 and 1086 has revealed that Uchtred (1027-1090) is the family member still holding Derbyshire manors: at Elton and Cowley listed with Henry de Ferrers as thane and Beeley/Rowsley/Bakewell as thane on King's land (all close to Bakewell in Western Derbyshire). These manors and thanage had been held since Uctred born circa 900ad and son of Eadwulf V purchased them from the departing Vikings.
