- Third son of Sir Simon, Lord of Cowton, and by marriage Lord of Uglebarnby and of the manors of Beckwith and Beckwithshaw; changed his name by marriage covenant, in 1226, from De Malebisse to Backwith, on his marriage with Lady Beckwith Bruce, one of the daughters of Sir William de Bruce, Lord of Uglebarnby, derived from Sir Robert de Bruce, progenitor of the royal Bruces of Scotland.
