Information obtained from Portsmouth County Clerk "Residents of Cass Township were allowed to be buried in Cass Township Cemetery, south of the town of Portsmouth, Iowa, without having to purchase a lot. The Clerk gave the following info on lots that were purchased and by whom that pertained to our family: Joseph Orris- purchased June 19, 1883 and from Detroit, Bronge Co., Detroit, MI.

Valentine's Obituary taken from Portsmouth, IA newspaper: "Valentine Whaley was born in New York State January 8, 1828 and died at Hiawatha, KS at the home of his daughter, October 21, 1914 being 86 years of age. In early life he came to Ohio and later returned to New York and there was united in marriage to Louise Thayer. In 1877 they moved to Portsmouth, Iowa, lived and raised their family here. To this union were born 4 boys and 6 girls, one girl having died in 1905. His wife died in 1893. Mr. Whaley has made his home with his children. He endured the hardships of Frontier days of Iowa, rearing a large family and see them doing well in the world. Funeral services were held at Portsmouth M.E. Church Thursday afternoon. Rev. E.W. Bates of Persia delivering the sermon. Burial was at Cass TWP Cemetery."

According to family members, Valentines Birth date is 1828, not 1831 as stated on the death certificate.

Found at Harlin County Court House, Jan. 25, 1893, pg. 191 book 135 - he sold land to A.W. Hillyer for $1,192.00.
