Valentine Sebastian van Reenen (1960 - 2003)

Brief overview:

Valentine (42), from Southfield, was shot dead at 08h00 on Saturday 19th July 2003, when he was attacked by four armed perpetrators, in the Dewfresh farm shop on the old Standfontein Road in Phillipi, Western Cape.

The attackers stole R15,000.00 in cash.

Valentine's death is the second in Philippi in just over three months. Association members disputed a police report that said while the robbers' vehicle had been spotted by the dog unit, the attackers could not be found.

The vice-chairperson of the Cape Flats Agricultural Association, Gunther Engelke said the robbers had hijacked a client's red Toyota Corolla, but managed to drive only about 50m before it stalled. "They walked away casually," said Engelke.

The Association's secretary Igor Rix said the police were on the scene in 30 minutes and no arrests had been made.

There is a R50,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the killers. And on April 4, Tolla Toerien was shot three times by armed robbers. He survived. The robbers escaped with R28 000 after ordering Toerien's friend, farmer Martin Reinke, at gunpoint not to move. The farmers were working on Weltevrede farm in Varkensvlei Road."
