Van S Bergdoll, the subject of this sketch, and one of the most honored and respected men in our community, passed from this life April 13, 1921, age 48 years, 10 months and 12 days. He was born June 1, 1872, on South Mill Creek near Rough Run, and was the son of Aaron and Rebecca Bergdoll. He had one brother and four sisters. His aged mother, his brother, John Bergdoll, of Goodwine, Ill., and one sister, Mrs. Hugh Ours of Seemly still survive. Besides these,he leaves to mourn his loss his wife, Mrs. Florence Bergdoll, and three children Lula, Evers and Cletis.
Van was from the boyhood up a tireless worker. He was physically strong and seldom sick, but always had much sympathy for others who were sick. No night was too dark, no rain too hard and no storm too severe for him to face to go for a doctor or carry a message for his friends when the phones failed to work. When troubles and afflictions came we all turned to Van. As our neighbor, we always found him willing, helpful and useful. Regardless of any tales that are told, those of us who were in the home most and knew the family best, know that there was no family troubles that caused the tragic act of his death. But feel sure that it was an affliction of the mind as he had told a member of the family a short time before his death that he felt that he was losing his mind.
He was a kind affectionate husband. His children were such as you seldom see in the homes of today. He was always counselor for the family and their homelife was so pleasant and agreeable that the shock of his death was all the more terrible to bear. When working about the farm some member of the family was nearby always with him-very often the little boy, Cletis, who was especially near to him.
More than a year ago he became a member of the United Brethren church at Hedrick's Chapel and remained a faithful member until the time os his death. On Friday morning, April 15th , funeral services were held at the home of his mother by Rev. W. H. Smith, of Maysville. His body was laid to rest in the family cemetery on the hill over looking his boyhood home. A large concourse of sorrowing relatives and friends were present to pay a last tribute of respect. Our hearts to out in sympathy to the bereaved families, especially to this fond mother and the orphan children in her home, to his lonely wife and to his sons and daughter, who are left without his care and guidance. May they look to Him who is able to comfort and help them in this the darkest hour of their lives. A NEIGHBOR -Courtesy of the Grant County Press
