Vera Greenwood

When Frank and I were attending confirmation classes at St Augustine's Church at the bottom of Holly Road we used to stop at the house in Highland Road on the way home up the hill and Vera would make us dinner, usually sausage and chips/mash if I remember rightly - this would have probably been 1961. I remember always asking for sterilised milk to drink as we never usually had that at home. When I got married the first time, Frank (Best Man) and I walked to St Augustine's, again stopping at Vera and Dick's and had a whisky with them - this must have been about 12.30pm as I think the wedding was at 1pm. I remember on the afternoon before my wedding (Sept 15th 1972) I was still feeling really rough from the night before and Dick brought me a bottle of light ale as a "hair of the dog" - can't believe it actually worked! After my Dad's funeral the wake was held at the house in Highland Road. (Mark Stokes)
