Her story begins in England. The year was about 1750. Verlinda was a girl of about 10 years of age. Her parents died and she was left to the care of her older sister. Verlinda was mistreated and abused to the point she ran away. It was a time of great immigration to the new world. Verlinda met a man in the streets of England. He told her that he was booking passage to America and would take her along with him. Young and naive, Verlinda agreed. Upon arriving in Virginia the stranger immediately sold the young Verlinda into indentured slavery.
Verlinda was purchased by William and Mary Banks, born in England but now living in Bedford Virginia. The Banks had 2 young boys just about the same age. John and Samuel. A great love grew between Samuel and the servant Verlinda and when Samuel reached the age of majority he secured Verlindas liberty from the family and married her. When William and Mary passed away Samuel inherited slaves from his parents estate which he and Verlinda immediately freed. Samuel and Verlindas Grandson, Lot Banks, was the Grandfather of Lot Taylor, husband of Callie Earl Laningham.
