About Vernon Charles Stutzman

True “gentle-man” Stutzman dies, 92

FOREST CITY – A man described as an example of a true “gentle-man” and who made lasting contributions to the people of Rutherford County will be remembered Saturday during a memorial service in Rutherfordton. Vernon Stutzman, 92, died Wednesday at his home. Memorial services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at the First United Methodist Church in Rutherfordton. Stutzman co-founded Rutherford County Habitat for Humanity and was instrumental in the development of the Recreation Trust Fund in Rutherfordton, funded with a Trust Fund from the late Mrs. David Lindsay, who lived in Rutherfordton. Rutherfordton Mayor Jimmy Dancy said Thursday morning, “I am personally saddened, I know our whole community is sad due to his death. “He was a strong person in our community and felt the needs of our whole of community. “In reality, he is the one who got the Recreation Trust Fund and Habitat for Humanity started,” Dancy said. Since its inception in the late 1980s, Habitat volunteers have already completed 60 homes. Volunteers are building four more houses in 2011. Dancy remembers the day Stutzman and Dr. Ernest Yelton, also of Rutherfordton, came to him and asked if he would serve as the treasurer of Habitat. “I never knew anything about Habitat at the time,” he said. “Vernon is responsible for everything I have experienced with Habitat. “As long as he was able to give, he wanted to be a part of the house dedication,” Dancy continued. “Vernon’s passing is a huge loss for Rutherfordton Hazel Crook. “Over the years, he had served Habitat as President and also held several other offices as well as a longtime Board of Director and as construction crew chief and other positions. Although he had retired from active volunteering with Habitat, until last Spring he still attended monthly Board meetings and also presented the traditional Bible to new Habitat homeowners at each new home dedication. Vernon continued to offer advise, guidance, prayers and encouragement – he was a dear and good person and an inspiration to all, we will miss him. Our condolences to his family for their loss.” Yelton said Stutzman was a “man you’d want to model your life after.” Rutherfordton Town Manager Karen Andrews said, “I had the opportunity to work with him when I first came to work for the town,” Andrews said. “He was very active in the wellbeing of the town, was a very civic minded man.” “He was one of those folks who was a pillar of our community and although he wasn’t from here, this was his home,” Andrews said. “He truly cared about the community and what happened. He wanted to see the best for the community. He was a prince of a guy and it’s a great loss to our community.” He was also an active volunteer with the Norris Public Library and the Methodist Church in Rutherfordton. Stutzman was a native of Ransom, Kansas, was a graduate of Fort Hays Kansas State University; Southern Methodist University, Perkins School of Theology, Dallas, Tx.; and Columbia University, School of Hospital Administration, N.Y., where he became a preceptor and a Lecturer. He was ordained a Methodist Minister in the North Texas Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church and eventually transferred to the NY Annual Conference. He served as Protestant Chaplain at the D.C. General Hospital in Washington, D.C. Following his work at Columbia University, he was Assistant Director of the Jewish Hospital of Brooklyn, and Administrator of Staten Island Hospital and served for 22 years as the CEO of the New York Methodist Hospital, Brooklyn. He is survived by his wife Marjorie Stutzman, two sons, Charles Stutzman, Rutherfordton and Ken Stutzman, Bartow, Fl. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of Rutherford County, P.O. Box 336 Forest City, NC 28043, or to, the Dillard Morrow Sunday School Class in care of First United Methodist Church, 264 North Main Street, Rutherfordton, NC 28139 or to Rutherford County Habitat for Humanity, P.O.
