From British Newspaper Archive: Portobello Advertiser Friday, 7 April 1876 Page 4 Gossip Of The Clubs

So we are to have a new Dean of Ripon in the person of a well-known London clergyman, of rather Evangelical, and rather broad Church, and yet rather High Church opinions, the Hon. and Rev. William Henry Fremantle, a son of Lord Cottesloe, formerly the right Hon. Sir Thomas Fremantle, M.P.

He is a man quite after the heart of Archbishop Tait, to whom he acted as honorary Chaplain for many years, both at London House and also at Lambeth.

He is only a little over forty years of age, is a First Class man and a University Prizeman of Oxford, and, what is more, a member of Dr Tait’s old college, Balliol. Being really a man of mark, and also the son of a very popular member of the House of Peers, it is not a matter of surprise that he should not be rewarded by a Deanery before he has well reached middle life.

London Monday, 24 June 1901. The Very Rev. William Henry Fremantle, Dean of Ripon, has written a letter to the "Times" in regard to the decrease in the British birth-rate. He points out that whereas in 1875 the rate was 35 per 1,000 per annum, it is now only 29.

(In the decade 1841-50, the birth-rate of the United Kingdom was 32.6; 1851-60, 34.1; 1861-70, 35.3; 1871-80, 35.5; the mean for 40 years being 34.4. In the same four decades the death-rate has been 22.4, 22.2, 22.6, and 21.5, showing a steadily-increasing surplus of births over deaths.)

William Henry Fremantle came of a long-lived family on both sides. He was born on 12 December 1831, at Swanbourne, in Buckinghamshire, at the house of his father, then Sir Thomas Fremantle, M.P. for Buckinghamshire and Whip to the Conservative Party, who afterwards was made a peer of the realm as the first Lord Cottesloe, and having served as Financial Secretary to the Treasury, Secretary at the War Office, Chief Secretary for Ireland, was from his special connection with finance called upon to attend the promulgation of the Budget year by year for nearly seventy years, viz. from 1826, under Mr. Canning, to the year of his death.

The Rev. the Hon. William Henry Fremantle, D.D., who resigned the Deanery a year ago last September after holding it for 20 years, died in London on Christmas Day, Monday, 25 December 1916, aged 85. He was the second son of the late Sir T. F. Fremantle, who was raised to the peerage as Baron Cottesloe in 1874, when his son was rector of St. Mary, Bryanston Square. The Dean's mother was a daughter of Field-Marshal Sir George Nugent.

The Dean of Ripon was a great advocate of efforts in the direction of international arbitration and for the reduction of armaments. At each of the Peace Conferences held at the Hague, he went over to preach to the British delegates in the English Church. He was one of the early sympathisers with the Old Catholic movement and his frequent travels abroad developed his interest in the Christian movements of the Continent. He was a strong opponent of Disestablishment in Wales, and during the Kikuyu controversy, he addressed a vigorous letter to 'The Times' in which he defended the admission of Nonconformists to the Holy Communion in the Church of England.

Dr. Fremantle Passes Away in London. The death took place, in London, on Monday, 25 December 1916, of the Rev. the Hon. William Henry Fremantle, who for twenty years held the position of Dean of Ripon, which he resigned in September 1915.

Dr. Fremantle, who was in his eighty-sixth year, was the second son of the late George Fremantle, who was raised to the Peerage as Baron Cottesloe in 1874. He was educated at Cheam School, Headley, Hampshire, RG19 8LD 51.35364, -1.25764, passing on in due course to Eton and Balliol.

He was ordained deacon in 1855, and priest in the following year, when took up a curacy at Middle Claydon. On the death of his uncle, the Hon. W. R. Fremantle, Dean of Ripon, in 1895, he was nominated by Lord Rosebery as his uncle's successor. In this capacity he was responsible for considerable parochial activity, to which he did full justice, and for some efforts to improve the interior arrangements of the church. But his work still left him free for public interests.

Dr. Fremantle was twice married, first in 1893, his bride being Isabella Eardley, youngest daughter of Sir Culling Eardley, who died in 1901, and again in 1903 to Sophia Stuart, eldest daughter of the late Major G. T. Stuart. The interment takes place at Essendon today, Wednesday, 27 December 1916.
