About Victorino Gomez
NOTE: There is doubt regarding Victorino Gomez's ethnicity:
Victorino Gomez is described as a Portuguese "tug captain who towed the rowing boats out to fish at sea" in an article about Kalk Bay. Source: The Property Magazine (via Internet Archive)
However, according to the book A Traditional way of Life - The story of the Kalk Bay Fishermen, written by George Stibbe and Iain Moss, the Gomez family were Spanish: "The first Gomez to arrive at Kalk Bay and join the fishing community was of Spanish origin. He, like many of the early settlers of Kalk Bay, jumped ship. He had two sons and a daughter. One of the sons, Victorino, married Elizabeth Sasman and they had 13 children."
Adding to the confusion, Victorino's son, John Alfred Gomez, is described as Portuguese in his 1953 Death Notice. Source: John Alfred Gomez's Estate Papers; Cape Town Archives; Depot: KAB; Source: MOOC; Vol. No.: 6/9/21776; Ref.: 6218/53

Victorino Gomez's first wife was possibly named Letta Scow or Elizabeth Mary Sattom:
The Cape Town Archives have a birth record for an unnamed son of "Victoriano Gormaz", a fisherman of mixed race from the Cape Colony, and Letta Scow, mixed race, born 27 Jan. 1896, Kalk Bay. This child did not live long, dying the same day - see Civil Death records, 1896 : Simon's Town, Image No.: 14
The Cape Town Archives also have a birth record for an unnamed daughter of "Victorius Gormez", mixed race, and Elizabeth Mary Sattom, mixed race, born 29 May 1897, Kalk Bay; registered by Annie Caroluis(sp?) and Margaret Bratteu(sp?), mother
