About Viola Elizabeth Piast of Teschen (Cieszyn)

Viola of Teschen, later known as Elizabeth (c.1291-1317) was a Polish princess member of the House of Piast in the Cieszyn branch and by marriage Queen of Bohemia and Poland. Wikipedia EN

It is not known whether the Viola and Wencelaus met before the wedding, which was on 5th October 1305 in Brno. Reasons for marriage is not too obvious, although later chroniclers describe how beautiful Viola was, the reason probably was not just her beauty (maybe it was the position of Cieszyn between Kingdom of Bohemia and Poland). By the time of the wedding, Wenceslaus was thinking of abandoning Viola and marrying Elizabeth, daughter of Andrew III of Hungary.

Wenceslaus was murdered in 1306, so Viola became a widow. She had little money and nowhere to go. Viola stayed with her sisters in laws, Anna and Elisabeth. Both princesses were fighting for the throne of Bohemia, but Viola stayed away. Possibly she moved to a nunnery.

Rudolf of Austria overthrew Anna of Bohemia and her husband Henry of Carinthia and they went to live in exile in Carinthia until the following year (when Rudolf died and they were invited back). But Anna and Henry were very unsecure, Elisabeth and her husband John fought Henry and Anna for their claim to the throne. By 1307 Elisabeth and John had overthrown Anna and Henry for the last time, Anna and Henry went back to Carinthia where Anna died in 1313.

Viola married again in 1316 to mighty bohemian nobleman Peter I of Rosenberg but she died in the following year. She remained childless.
