Violet Sebag-Montefiore

It would not be possible in small compass to do full justice to the many good causes to which Violet Sebag-Montefiore devoted so much of her life, writes Mr Albert I. Polack, but two in particular merit special mention.

She became chairman of the care committee of the Stepney Jewish School of the Sephardi Women's Guild of the Lauderdale Road Synagogue. She was a life member of the Jewish Welfare Board and chaired the first old people's home for the mentally frail, Fenton House. And her special artistic gifts found practical expression as chairman of the arts and letters committee of the National Council of Women.

She was the first woman delegate to serve on the Board of Deputies, representing her synagogue. But of even greater significance than these achievements was the endearing and warm - hearted quality of her personality.

Her deep devotion to Judaism helped her to bear with serenity and fortitude family adversities, among them the recent death of her husband Jack after over 50 years of happy married life. Her many qualities were extolled by the Haham, Rabbi Dr S. Gaon, in a moving tribute which he delivered at the funeral service at Ramsgate.

Mrs Kitty Stolar writes: Violet who was the great-granddaughter of Chief Rabbi Dr Nathan Marcus Adler, adopted Sephardism with her usual enthusiasm for high ideals. She used to say that the Sephardim were much gentler, better mannered and kinder to their women than the Ashkenazim yet she would also talk of "Cohen courage," as exemplified by her grandfather, Alfred Louis Cohen, who suffered so much in his last illness and whose courage was equalled by hers in her own suffering. Her generosity was unbounded: to her it was an integral part of life, not a merit.
