English translation:

"The paternal great-grandfather, also named Moses, of Tuscan origin, had settled first in Romagna but then, because of anti-Jewish discrimination implemented by the papal authorities, had emigrated to Trieste, then under Austrian rule. In this city the Jews had been emancipated by the end of the eighteenth century and enjoyed a decent economic prosperity thanks to the maritime commerce of the then free port of the Habsburg empire. With his grandfather Vittorio, Abraham, the Castiglioni family were relatively well-off, but the depression that struck Trieste with the French occupation, bankrupted the company and Abraham himself was forced to accept the post of janitor in the school of the local Jewish community.

Prematurely widowed by the death of his first wife, Enrichetta Bolaffio, (Vittorio) Castiglioni mourned for three years before marrying again, this time Giulia Sonnino. He had five children***, including Arturo, who was head doctor at Lloyd Trieste and professor of medicine in Padua, and Camillo."

  • ** N.B. It is unclear which wife was the mother of which of the five children except that in the same source the mother of Arturo and Camillo is definitely named as being Enrichetta Bolaffio in their respective biographies: Arturo Castiglioni nell’Enciclopedia Treccani
