Volko Salganik

Volko was born in Kadlubitsa a former Jewish colony, now it is a part of Fastov, Kiev region. His date of birth is in doubt. By the documents he was born on the 18th November 1906, but everyone claimed that he was born on Yom Kippur, on the 18th September , and this is was the date that he celebrated his birthday and the date that was written on his tombstone.

Also, there are some doubts about the year of born, His wife and himself (sometimes) claimed that he was born in 1904 and not in 1906 , probably they were right because on the 18th September 1904 is exactly Yom Kippur, and on the 18th September 1906 its 1 day before Rosh Hashana eve.

Volko was born to a religious family, he had about 8-9 brothers and sisters, only 5 are known. As a kid,he lost his father in a pogrom in 1919, and his family were hidden from the fear they will be murdered too.

Volko participated in the Winter War in Finland and in the WW II since 23rd July 1941 until the end of the war in 9th May 1945 in Berlin, he participated in the battle of Stalingrad (at the Soviet counter-attack, and got the Medal "For the Defence of Stalingrad" on the 22.12.1942), Warsaw , Berlin and more cities. He was a warehouse (provided clothing, food) at the Technical Artillery Unit in the 1st Belorussian Front . He was picked as a warehouse and an assistant of a Polkovnik, and by Volko, he saved his life. Although, by the award list of Volko from April 1945, he was actually artillery machinery technician. After he thought he lost his wife and kids, and they thought they lost their father, they reunited back home in Kiev in late 1945, he just come back home and saw them. .He finished the was as a Yefreytor

In his rest of his life he worked also as a kind of warehouse. He passed away 6 days only before the marriage of his great granddaughter , Ira.

23 years after his death,on May 2020, his granddaughter, Alla, received behalf his name the medal of Fighters against Nazis from the Israeli Ministry of Defense
