     Text: Dr. Walter Newhouse
     "Dr. Walter Newhouse, 71, of Tucson, Ariz, died Sunday, Sept. 21.
     Born at Fisher, December 13, 1897, he was a son of the late Edward and Hattie Elder Newhouse. He was married to the former Grace Edna Brown, who survives.
     Dr. Newhouse's life was spent, collecting ore samples, touring mines, traveling and teaching. He traveled to mines in Ireland, Russia, Africa, South America and extensively in the United States.
     He received a BS degree at Penn State and a PhD from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology at Cambridge, Mass. He was a professor of geology at M.I.T. for 24 years. In 1946 he went to Chicago and taught at the University of Chicago for 17 years. After his retirement in 1963, he made his home in Tucson, where he continued his research in geology. At the time of his death, he was preparing a book for publication.
     In addition to his wife, he is survived by one son W. Jan, professor of Marine Biology at the University of Hawaii at Honolulu; four grandchildren; three sisters. Mrs. Percy (Helen) Wells of New Bethlehem, Mrs. Alvin (Edith) Olsen of Irvine and Mrs. Dwight (Mildred) Breakey of Brookville: and two brothers, Berton Newhouse of Fisher and Robert Newhouse of Indiana.
     He was preceded in death by three sisters, Mrs. Loretta Chrisjohn of Bradford, Mrs. Twila Kempf of Kane and Mrs. Rose Cookson of fisher.
     Funeral services were conducted at the Arizona Mortuary in Tucson and private burial was at Evergreen Cemetery at Tucson."
