Walter Haines was born circa 1582 in Renhold, Bedfordshire County, England. He married Mary Watford on April 27, 1607. Their eldest son, Walter Haines Jr., was baptized on February 5, 1608 in the All Saints Anglican Church in Renhold. He was admitted to Queens College, Cambridge for the Easter term of 1626 and graduated B.A. in 1630 and M.A. in 1633. Walter Haines Jr. was appointed Vicar of the All Saints Church in 1630 and died on April 28, 1638. Mary Watford died on June 19, 1632 and her husband, Walter Haines, died on January 26, 1633. The will of Walter Haines was dated December 1632 and his daughter, Joan Haines, was executrix, and his eldest son, Walter Haines Jr., was the overseer of his will. William Haines and his brother, Richard Haines, orphan sons of Walter Haines and Mary Watford, emigrated as Puritans to America on the ship “Griffin” arriving at Boston, Massachusetts Bay Colony, on September 18, 1634. Walter Haines & Mary Watford had eight children born in Renhold, two of whom and younger brothers of the Rev. Walter Haynes, emigrated to America. The brothers were Richard, baptised on 18th November 1621 and William, baptised on 6th January 1624. They were aged respectively 12 and 10, and sailed on the “Griffin” arriving in Boston, Massachusetts, on 14th September 1634. On arrival they went to live with the Ingersoll family from Sandy, Bedfordshire, who had emigrated in 1629 and whom the boys and their family must have known in England; the family settled in Haverhill, Massachusetts. William married Sarah Ingersoll in 1644. The descendants of William and Sarah Haynes had incredible adventures with Indians in their early days in America and branches of the family are still there in Canada and the USA.
