About Walter Patterson, U.S. Representative

Walter Patterson,

U.S. Congressman. A descendant of New York's prominent Livingston family, he was born in Columbia County in the 1780's, studied law and became an attorney in Ancram. Patterson was also a farmer and became involved in several business ventures, including superintending the Ancram Iron Works.

Patterson was active in the New York Militia, serving as quartermaster of the 12th Infantry Brigade. In 1818 he served in the New York Assembly, and he was Ancram's Town Supervisor from 1821-1823.

In 1820 he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives as a Federalist and served one term, 1821-1823. After his House term he moved to the town of Livingston, where he was appointed Postmaster and served as Town Supervisor from 1826-1828. In the 1820s and 1830s Patterson was a Columbia County Court Judge. In the 1840s he moved to Philadelphia, where he practiced law until his death.
