1. Hattie, called “Della,” and her husband Walter farmed near Union, Iowa until Walter died in 1931. She kept a diary of her adult life which is now in the possession of her descendants.
In the diary she writes about the hard times the family endured after the death of her husband. Olen, who was in his late twenties at the time of his father’s death, and Cecil, who was a child of eleven, were living with their parents on the farm. In February of 1932 in the throws of the “Depression” Della and her two sons moved to Eldora, Iowa. They lived in a house by the Minneapolis and St Louis Railroad coal shed for one month, and then they moved to 18th Ave. There they lived for four years, paying ten dollars a month rent. In 1936 Olen and Cecil bought a house in Eldora where Della lived until her death in 1980. (ibid., Kapfer)

Children:
1. Olen Lester Swaim was born December 2, 1892, in Marshall, County, Iowa. He lived with his parents, and farmed with his father until 1931 when his father died. In 1932 he moved to Eldora, Iowa with his mother and brother, Cecil. There he bought a Dodge truck, and was able to make a living by hauling. Olen was also a musician. He played the fiddle for dances as far away as Marshalltown, Iowa.
After his mother’s death, Olen married Mabel Lucille Hodge on October 7, 1944, in Waterloo, Iowa. Mabel was born December 8, 1919, in Eldora, Hardin, Iowa. She was the daughter of Charles Russell and Minnie Pearl Noyer Hodge. Having no children of their own, they raised two of Olen’s nephew’s boys. Olen died in Eldora on August 1, 1971, and was buried in the Miller Cemetery in Hardin County. Mabel moved to Spencer, Iowa where she still lived in 1980. (ibid., Kapfer)
2. Boy (no name) Swaim, born March 29, 1894. He is buried in Hardin County, Iowa; Miller Cemetery.
3. Guendaline Swaim was born June 23, 1897, and died August 12, 1899. She is buried in Miller Cemetery.

5. Vernie Swaim, born December 9, 1911, and died May 7, 1919. He is buried in Miller Cemetery.
6. Cecil Adelbert Swaim was born April 10, 1917. He was thirteen years old when his father died. He, with his mother and brother Olen then moved to Eldora, Hardin, Iowa. He married Anna Grace Trump November 27, 1938 in Marshalltown, Iowa. She was born September 7, 1916 in Union, Hardin, Iowa. He retired from farming, and they live in Eldora, where they were living in 1980.
They were the parents of four children:
a. Joyce Ann Swaim was born June 17, 1940 in Eldora, Hardin, Iowa. On June 20, 1958, she married Robert William Pearce. He was born April 15, 1938, the son of Clifford and Tillie Mein Pearce. Robert was a farmer in Iowa Falls, Iowa, before he he moved to Sweet Water, Tennessee. (ibid.)

(1). William David Pearce was born October 16, 1959. He married Luann Kay Uroman on May 27, 1977 in Iowa Falls, Iowa.

(3). Kenneth Robert Pearce was born September 11, 1961. He married Teresa Ann Martin on October 3, 1980 in Iowa Falls.

(4). Karen Joy Pearce was born September 3, 1962. She married Thomas Lee Davies on July 31, 1982 in Centerville, Iowa.
b. Ruth Ellen Swaim was March 24, 1942 in Hubbard, Hardin, Iowa. She married Dennis John Tidman November 17, 1960 in Owasa, Iowa. John was born July 15, 1940 in in Iowa Falls, Iowa. He is the son of John F. and Fern Bertha Neubauer Tidman. Ruth and Dennis live near Hubbard, Hardin, Iowa in 1985. He is a farmer. Their five children were born in Iowa Falls, Iowa:

(1). Julie Ann Tidman was born Sep. 11, 1963.

d. Jerry Walter Swaim was born January 14, 1948. He married Young Hui Lee on July 2, 1971 in Owasa, Iowa. She was born June 14, 1947 in Korea. They live in Waterloo, Iowa where he is an employee of John Deere Company. (ibid., Kapfer 1985)
