About Walter d'Evereux
Cawley, in his FMG Medieval Lands database, posits Gautier (Walter) as the son of Robert d'Evreux and his wife Herleva (others give his parents as William d'Evreux and Hawise de Lacy, among others). Cawley also states that he was the father of Edward of Salisbury. However, there is a lack of solid documentation for these relationships, so this man remains something of a mystery.
--------------------
According to Burkes Extinct Peerage, the father of Edward of Salisbury was a Norman named Walter from Rosmar in Normandy. But Keats-Rohan says Edward was English with lands through his mother. He could be both.

=========================================
The Earls of Salisbury are sometimes mistakenly assigned the surname "d’Evreux", but it is spurious, arising from confusion over the nickname of a fictitious ancestor, Walter le Ewrus (Walter the Fortunate). The family of the Earls of Salisbury never used the name "d’Evreux", they do not descend from the Norman Counts of Evreux, nor do the later Devereux derive from them. See Cokayne, George (1982). The Complete Peerage of England, Scotland, Ireland, Great Britain, and the United Kingdom, Extant, Extinct, or Dormant XI. Gloucester England: A. Sutton. p. 373, note (b). ISBN 0-904387-82-8.
