About Warren Smith (Died Haun's Mill)
Biographical Summary
Upon hearing the restored gospel taught by Simeon Carter, the Smiths joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1831, then moved to Kirtland, Ohio the following year. During the summer of 1838, the Smith family (consisting of Warren and Amanda, Willard, Sardius, twins Alma and Alvira, and Ortencia) left Ohio bound for Missouri. The Smiths eventually left the group they started with to join a smaller group consisting of ten families headed by Joseph Young. The company arrived at Haun's Mill in eastern Caldwell County on 28 October 1838, intending to remain for a few days before continuing the rest of the way to Far West, Missouri. Two days after their arrival at the Mormon settlement, the tragedy occurred.

Research indicates that there were two different Warren Smiths who married Amanda Melissa Barnes:
- Warren Smith (of Becket Berkshire Massachusetts) who was born in 1794 and was killed in 1838 at Haun's Mill. To this marriage between Warren Smith and Amanda were apparently born five children between the years of 1827-1834. One of the children was Sardius Smith who was also murdered at Haun's Mill.
- Warren Smith of Nashville, Tennessee was born in 1808 and died in Utah in 1884. They were married in 1840; he and Amanda had three children born between 1842 and 1846)
