About Wife of John Moss

Goody Charles Moss

BORN England
DIED Colonial British America
BURIED Colonial British America

Biography

Little is known of John Moss’ wife except that she was called "Goody" [3] which certainly was not unusual in those days. Her maiden name may have been Charles (or not) due to a brother--in-law relationship. We have no primary source for her first name, consequently the name of the wife of John Moss has not been determined.[5] In 1648 he was attorney for his " brother-in-law," John Charles, a seafaring man who lived in Branford and Saybrook. Possibly her maiden name was Charles or they married sisters.

The English ancestry of John Moss is unproven, but there is a family tradition that he was connected with that of Charles Moss, Bishop of St. David* in 1766 and Bishop of Bath and Wells in 1774, whose son, Charles, was Bishop of Oxford, in 1807. He was surely of a former generation. The name was an honorable one in England, and was borne by several other distinguished men. John Moss of New Haven and Wallingford was a " cousin " of John Beach of the latter town and so calls him in a deed in 1689. In 1648, while living in New Haven, he gave land to Richard Beach, and perhaps the same land called that year " Richard Beeches wives lot" The connection between these two families is unknown to us. Notes

Immigrant Cpl. John Moss, son of John Moss, born 1604 in England, died 31 March 1707, aged 103, at Wallingford, New Haven Co., Ct. Married Unknown possibly Charles, who was possibly brother of John Charles. John Moss, immigrant from England to Connecticut, the ancestor of all who bear the name in these parts, was one of the earliest settlers of New Haven colony.

There is an unsubstantiated theory in the book Charles Family History, Nancy Wach says that John Geer and his wife Sarah (Moss) Geer, her brother, John and John Charles and his sisters all set sail for the New World on the same ship, the Winterhee. The Winterhee was wrecked and the survivors ended up in Barbados, later they continued they journey. John Geer was lost at sea during or before this event.
