About Wilford Charles Brimley

On a U.S. Passport Application dated July 25, 1911, Wilford Charles Brimley described himself as being 19 years old, 5' 7" in height, with dark hair and gray eyes, a light complexion, round face and chin, medium nose, forehead and mouth, and that he followed the occupation of stenographer. He was about to go abroad temporarily; he intended to return to the U.S. in about three years. The person who certified that they knew Wilford Charles Brimley to be a native born citizen of the United States was George Q. Cannon of Salt Lake City, Utah. Cannon was an Apostle of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Wilford requested that his passport be sent to Rudger Clawson at Durham House, 295 Edge Lane, Liverpool, England. Wilford was about to go on a mission for the LDS church at the time.

Wilford departed Liverpool, England for New York City on the ship "Cedric", arriving on August 23, 1913, so he must have fulfilled his mission with the church by then. He was 21 years of age, and his address was 2565 State Street, Salt Lake City, Utah.

Wilford married Margaret Ellen Anderson on December 24, 1915, when she was 24 years old.

On his WWI Draft Registration Card completed June 6, 1917, Wilford stated he lived at 165 Commonwealth Avenue, was born on October 31, 1891, in Manti, Utah, and his current occupation was Clerk of the Granite School District, at 3212 So. State Street, Salt Lake City, Salt Lake County, Utah. The record further stated that he was married and had one child. He stated he was of medium height and build, and that his eyes were blue and his hair brown.

In the 1930 U.S. Federal Census, Wilford was 38 years old, living with his wife, Margaret E., 38. They were living in Salt Lake City, Utah, and their children were listed as: Donald E., 15, Dorothy, 12, and Ruth M., 4 years, 11 months old. Wilford was working as the supervisor of and insurance company.

Wilford married Lola Samantha Nelson, January 25, 1933, in Manti, Sanpete, Utah, and was sealed to her the same day. They had five children all of whom were currently living in about 1945. Wilford and his first wife, Margaret, must have divorced sometime between 1930 and 1932. I could not find Margaret or their children, Donald, Dorothy and Ruth, in the 1940 census, however, a California Death Index Record showed that Margaret Ellen Brimley, born in Utah on June 6, 1891, passed away on July 11, 1986, in San Mateo, California.

In the 1940 U.S. Federal Census, Wilford, 48, was living in Los Angeles, California, at 2269 Pelham Avenue, in a home he owned valued at $6,000.00 with his second wife, Lola, 41, and their children Donna Janeen, age 6, Anthony Wilford, age 5, and Sterling Nelson, age 3, along with Alice L. Madsen, 20, Lola's sister. In this census, Wilford was listed as a life insurance agent, whose income for 52 weeks of work at 48 hours per week in 1939 was $4,900.00. Wilford had attended two years of college, and his wife Lola, 4 years. Their daughter, Donna Janeen was in the first grade, and Lola's sister, Alice L. Madsen, had attended one year of college and was born in Wyoming.

Wilford and Lola had five children, Donna Janeen, Anthony Wilford, Sterling Nelson, Mary Lucile and Alyce Carol Brimley. Wilford passed away at the age of 89 on April 5, 1981, while living in Salt Lake City, Utah, and was buried in the Centerville Cemetery in Centerville, Davis County, Utah.

Wiilford and Lola's son, Anthony Wilford Brimley, became an actor and was featured in many television programs and movies. He is still living as of 2017.
