About Lola Samantha Brimley

The above photo of Lola Samantha (Nelson) Brimley was found on the website FamilySearch.org and shows Lola at the piano and in the background are her niece, Alice Lorraine Madsen, and Alice's singing partner Bob Reese. The photo was posted on the website by Janeen Stevens on July 1, 2016. There is another photo on the Media Tab above showing Lola in her younger days.

Lola Samantha Nelson married Wilford Charles Brimley January 25, 1933, in Sanpete County, Utah. She was the only child of Heber Christian Nelson and Samantha Madsen. At the time of their marriage Lola was 33 years old, having been born March 2, 1899, in Bloomington, Bear Lake County, Idaho.

Her mother, Samantha was born in 1875, in Bloomington, Idaho, the daughter of Anton Peter Madsen, born in Denmark in 1852, and Elizabeth Mary Jane Nelson, born in Willard, Box Elder, Utah, in 1854. Anton Peter Madsen came to Utah in 1857 with his parents from Denmark after they joined the LDS Church there in the early 1850's. Lola's father, Heber Christian Nelson, was the son of Christian Nelson of Denmark and Ann Josephine Evans of Wales. He was also born in Bloomington, Idaho, in 1871.

Lola's husband, Wilford Charles Brimley, was the son of William Jedediah Brimley and Margaret Kirk. William was born in Manchester, England, in 1857, the son of Richard Brimley and Ann Southworth. Margaret Kirk was born in 1866 in Salt Lake City, Utah, but her parents, Samuel Kirk and Margaret Fisher were both born in Scotland, and came to America in 1864, two years before Margaret was born.

Before Lola and Wilford were married, in 1930, she was 31 years old and still living with her parents, Heber, 57, and Samantha, 55, in Salt Lake City, Utah, and also living with them was Lola's cousin, Alice Lorraine Madsen, 10. Alice was the daughter of Samantha's brother Anton Elmer Madsen, and his wife, Sarah Nelson Madsen, who died in 1921 after having 8 children. Alice was only 1 year old when her mother passed away, and was probably sent to live with Heber and Samantha since they had only one child, Lola. Lola's father was working as a mattress maker. The home they owned was located at 511 C Street and was valued at $4,000.

By the 1940 census, Lola and Wilford were living at 2269 Pelham Avenue in Los Angeles, California, and were listed as follows in the census record: Wilford C., 48, Lola N., 41, and their children, Janeen Donna, 6, Anthony Wilford, 5, Sterling Nelson, 3, and also living with them was Lola's cousin, Alice L. Madsen, 20 years old. Wilford was working as a life insurance agent and for the 52 weeks he worked at 48 hours per week his income was $4,900. Wilford had 2 years of college, Lola had 4 years, and her cousin Alice had 1 year of college. Janeen was in the first grade. Wilford and Lola owned their own home which was valued at $6,000. They had two more daughters, Alyce Carol in September of 1940, and Mary Lucile in June of 1943. Wilford also later worked as a real estate agent.

Lola's father, Heber Christian Nelson, passed away July 9, 1951, at the age of 80 years old at the LDS Hospital in Salt Lake City, Utah. He died from cerebral thrombosis and arteriosclerosis, and was a retired farmer. He was buried in the Salt Lake City Cemetery. Her mother, Samantha Madsen Nelson, died three years later on June 1, 1954, in Salt Lake City, and was buried with her husband in the Salt Lake City Cemetery.

In 1954 Lola and Wilford Brimley were living at 609 Ashland Avenue in Santa Monica, California, with their children, Janeen, Anthony Wilford, and Sterling. Wilford was working as an insurance agent for New York Life Insurance Company. Anthony was in the U.S. Marine Corps, and Janeen and Sterling were students.

On June 2, 1955, Lola and Wilford's daughter Donna Janeen married Dale Bayles Stevens in Utah county, Utah. She was a student at Brigham Young University and had been living at 650 East 800 North in Provo, Utah. Dale was born in Provo, Utah, in 1932, the son of Edward Stevens and Velyn Bayles. Sadly, his father was killed in 1938 when Dale was just 6 years old. His father was a master mechanic for the Northwestern Engineering Company and was instantly killed when an oil tank he was welding exploded. Ed was only about 45 years old at the time of his death.

On July 6, 1956, Lola and Wilford's son, Anthony Wilford Brimley married Lynne Bagley, in Los Angeles, California. He was 21 years old and she was 19 at the time of their marriage. In 1963 they were living at 3429 McManus Avenue in Culver City, California, and Anthony Wilford was working as a farrier. They had four sons, but sadly their last son Lawrence lived only 28 days due to a congenital aortic stenosis. He was born in Caldwell, Idaho, in 1966. Wilford became a very well known actor and had over 70 appearances in television, movies and commercials. After his wife, Lynne, passed away, he married Joan Marie Justice on September 26, 2002, in Clark County, Nevada. On October 31, 2007, he married Beverly Berry, and they lived on a ranch Greybull, Wyoming, and in Santa Clara, Utah. In 2009, they founded a nonprofit organization Hands Across the Saddle (HATS) in the Big Horn Basin of Wyoming.

In 1961 Lola and Wilford's son Sterling was attending Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, and was listed in the Banyan yearbook as a "Sportsmen" a group or club who were "aiming at achieving a balance of leadership, outdoor sports, social and cultural activities. They were organized during the winter quarter of 1959, and they held a Sportsmen Cup Ski Race for both students and townspeople, a rabbit hunt, and an overnight camping trip. They participated in many different sports events throughout the year." The following year Sterling married Pamela J. Collier in Los Angeles, California. He was 26 and she was 19 years old at the time of their marriage. They later divorced and on May 29, 1984, he married Paulette S. Geary, in Zephyr Cove, Nevada.

Lola and Wilford's daughter Alyce Carol married Wayne Gordon Scheiss of Santa Monica, California, and they had 7 children. Daughter Mary Lucille married Albert Eric Eastman and they also had 7 children.

Lola passed away September 23, 1979, in Salt Lake City, Utah, and was buried in the Centerville City Cemetery. Her husband Wilford Charles Brimley, born October 30, 1891, in Manti, Sanpete Utah, passed away two years later on April 5, 1981, also in Salt Lake City, and was buried with his wife in the Centerville Cemetery.
