Wilfred John Saldanha

Also went by Wilfred J "Sauldane". Adventurer. Left Mangalore in 1899 to study at Joseph's College, Trichy. From there he proceeded to Belgaum & Bombay. Probably has the distinction of being the first Mangalorean to set foot in San Francisco in 1906, going there via the Pacific having joined the SS Tuscorara as a Jr Marine Engineer. After spending 2 years in San Francisco, he travelled widely in America and Europe, settling down in England where he lived until 1946, when he finally returned to his hometown of Mangalore after an absence of 47 years. He eventually settled in Coonoor, Nilgiris, till his death.
