RESTORING NEGLECTED 'JEWEL' IN SCARSDALE

By ROBERTA HERSHENSON Published: March 29, 1987

VILLAGE trucks have cleared away a decade of overgrowth, the Boy Scouts are repainting an exhibit area and Walter D. Terrell, director of the once-popular but long-neglected Weinberg Nature Center, is scheduling new spring programs for the community as work proceeds to restore the seven-acre preserve, owned by Scarsdale and situated just east of the Hutchinson River Parkway on Mamaroneck Road in the village.

It's a special little jewel, said Kenneth Batchelor, Scarsdale's Superintendent of Parks, Recreation and Conservation. The department oversees the center, and Mr. Batchelor is supervising the restoration. You can find here not only wonderful natural environment combining forest and wet area but also a part of Scarsdale's history, he said.

The Weinberg Nature Center property once belonged to Wilhelm Weinberg, a Dutch-born banker and art collector who immigrated to the United States in 1941. Mr. Weinberg's wife and three children died in Auschwitz (the Nazis invaded Holland while the financier was away on business), and when he died in 1958 he left the bulk of his large estate to educational and charitable institutions. The estate's executors bequeathed the Mamaroneck Road land to the village of Scarsdale in 1966.
