About William Clark Brown
William Clark Brown was actually born William Clark. He attached the name Brown when he was apprehended for stealing a blanket, sheet and tablecloth from the wheatsheaf Hotel ion Holywell st, Strand and two sheets from the Kings Arms,oxford st. It has been conjectured that he did this in an attempt to save disgrace for the rest of the family.
He was sentenced to 7yrs transportation and after 2 yrs in the Pentonville Prison was sent to Australia in 1845 on the ship 'Stratheden'. On stepping shore at Melbourne in January 1846 he was considered to be a free man
