William Bradford, brother of Robert Bradford,[1] was born about 1639; he died at Beverly, Essex County, Massachusetts, 15 June 1717, aged about 78.[2]

On 30 December 1706, William Bradford was named administrator of his brother's estate. The inventory of Robert's estate, including 17-3/4 acres of upland and swamp ground, totalled £203 2s 8d. After the satisfaction of debts, the estate was conferred upon "William Bradford of Beverly only surviving bro. of Robert Bradford ..."[7]

Research Notes

Brother, not son, of Robert Bradford. By subscription, see AmericanAncestors for page 7 of the estate file, "William Bradford of Beverly only surviving bro. of Robert Bradford ..."

A prior version of this profile treated Robert as William's father, "Proposed father may have been baptized 1621, although a recorded deposition implies 1626 (no primary source). Father's probate is Dec 1706, spouse at death is Hannah, m. abt 1672, no source provided for later deaths. A marriage of Robert and Hannah in Boston occurred early 1640's but is implied to be a different Robert."

Age/date of birth. His estimated date of birth is based on the age reported in his Beverly death record, William [sr., June 16. C. R. ; 17, C. R. I.], June 15, 1717, a. abt 78 y."

A William Bradford testified in 1694/5 that he was [about] age 70 (thus born about 1627).[15] The underlying record has not been reviewed to determine the identity of this William.

Possible parentage. Of Robert and William Bradford's parentage, Scott Andrew Bartley (2006) wrote,[16] "It seems possibe the two brothers ... are the oldest children of Robert Bradford of Boston." And also, "This theory seems to fall apart when Robert deeds [in 1673] "out of my ffatherly affection I beare to my onely sone Moses Bradford." Further, "The only other possibility is that these are the unidentified chidren of John^1 Bradford of Dorechester as mentioned only in the will of his brother Alexander^1 Bradford of Dorechester."

Second wife? Walter Goodwin Davis reported William Bradford married a second time, to Jane (Allison) Shaw, daughter of Ralph Allison and his wife, Anne Dixon. Jane would have been the widow of Peter Shaw. See Ancestry of Bethia Harris ... (Portland, Me., The Southworth Press, 1934), 122; digital images, Hathi Trust.

Genealogical Dictionary of Maine and New Hampshire (part 5, p. 626), also refers to this Jane Allison, daughter of Ralph, writing that she married (2) William Bradford of Beverly, and (3) Robert Leach.
