About Willem Johannes de Klerk
From: FW de Klerk, an autobiography
By 1895 the Theological School of the Reformed Church of South Africa had twenty four students, one of whom was my grandfather, Willem Johannes de Klerk. He was twice imprisoned [during the Boer War] because, as the British put it, he was one of those 'who had not distinguished themselves by their loyalty to us'. After his imprisonment by the British, he returned to Burgersdorp Theological College from which he graduated as minister of religion in 1902. He was a deeply committed Africana nationalist, and had twice stood unsuccessfully for Parliament.
