About William Alberson

• The "Sharp's Map of 1700" indicates the location of this William Albertson's property which came to him through his father (also a William) There were several Alber(t)sons down through the generations who were millers. And, there was another Albertson mill quite distant from WIlliam's property owned by a David Albertson (1801-1844) in 1835. These two mills are detailed on a much later map that is included in a book/pamphlet published by the Camden Historical Society, OLD MILLS OF CAMDEN COUNTY (1962) ~by Charles S. Boyer; map by Harry Marvin "the road system is that of 1846"

The Marvin Map depicts the William mill site east of the original Albertson property as mapped by Sharp in 1700. This seems to confirm reports that generations bought much more land in the early years of West Jersey.

• WIlliam was said (incorrectly) to have been born in Gloucester area, province of New Jersey; also said to have been born in Wiltshire, England. The English allegation is reinforced by the fact that his Willis in-laws were from Wiltshire. Other Albersons of the mid 17th century are known to have lived in nearby Bidford-on-Avon.

William's wife, Esther (Willis) was born in 1677. A guess would indicate that his birth year may be close to his bride's. (examine the timeline for William's father) > there are clues there to suggest that William was born in Ireland.

William married Esther in 8/9/1695 (in Westbury, NY)(Long Island); Esther being part of a Quaker family.

"To his son William, in the year 1698, he (his father) deeded the homestead property, whereon he remained until his decease in 1720. This was a valuable estate, and he improved it by enlarging and banking the meadow attached to the property, which, at that time, was the only soil from which hay and pasture were derived. The artificial grasses now used upon the upland, had not then attracted the attention of agriculturists, for which reason the meadow and marsh lands along the streams commanded much the higher price, and were considered as a necessary appendage to every farm. The meadow land on each of the branches of Newton creek, was, no doubt, the attraction that brought the settlers first to this place, and was, in fact, the only means they had for sustaining their cattle.

To avoid expense and to secure the land from the overflow of the tide, William Albertson placed a dam across the south branch, and reclaimed much of the marsh above the same. In this dam there were tide gates, the construction and utility of which need not be explained here. These were kept in use until the dyke was put across the mouth of the creek, at the river, in 1786. ...Leaming & Spicer's Laws. ...Friends' Records, Long Island.

Many genealogies name Wiltshire England... but do not cite a reference for this. In any case, the William Alberson was not born on the American side of the Atlantic as his parents were still in Ireland in 1681.

There wasn't a Quaker William Alberson with dates (1684-1709)

(Father) William died in 1709.. probably in PA and was probably buried there
(Son) WIlliam was born in the 1680s and died c. 1720.

The burial in Oaklyn's Newton cem. is probably that of (Son) William.
