Laboratory and clinical research (1980-1982): Lipid transfer across the human placenta. Clinical Research: Measurement of free fatty acids in blood specimens collected simultaneously from maternal and umbilical cord blood at the time of normal delivery or caesarian section. Detailed biometric measurements were made of the growth of low birth weight (<1.5 kg & <32 wks gestation) infants fed on either breast or formula milk.

1982-1992 (cont.) Laboratory Research: Developed and refined a bench model to perfuse selected lobes of freshly delivered human placenta. The model enabled the accurate measurement in vitro of rates and amounts of various lipids transferred across the placenta as well as the synthesis of arachidonic acid by the placenta. Lipid measurements were made by various methods including (but not limited to) Gas Liquid Chromatography and High Pressure Liquid Chromatography. Samples of adipose tissue were collected from aborted fetuses for an Electron Microscopy study of the development of brown adipose tissue . Clinical duties: Medical Director, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Queen's Medical Centre. I was charged with the responsibility of opening and running this new unit to provide both routine and intensive neonatal care for an obstetric service with 5,000 deliveries per year.

1980-1981 Lecturer: Department of Child Health, University of Nottingham. Academic duties: Director of the Postgraduate Course in Community Pediatrics responsible for updating and rewriting the teaching manual for the course in community pediatrics. Coordinator of the examination for certification in community pediatrics. Lectures on the subjects of normal and abnormal child growth & development, development and health screening procedures in the community. Post-graduate didactic seminars to General Practitioner's and Senior House Officers in pediatrics and general practice on the coordination of community based child health care services with hospital based specialists, and the appropriate management in the community of chronic serious childhood illness. 1976-1977 Registrar in Internal Medicine: Liverpool Royal Infirmary (LRI), departments of General Internal Medicine, Pulmonary Medicine and Rheumatology. The LRI is the main teaching hospital and hub of the School of Medicine for the University of Liverpool. The LRI is staffed by the faculty of the University of Liverpool, who are appointed as consultants to the National Health Service. My duties were daily teaching rounds with medical students and formal tutorials once a week. Clinical duties were daily rounds in the inpatient a service and an outpatient clinic twice a week.

1975-1976 Senior House Officer: Broadgreen Teaching Hospital, Department of Internal Medicine. This hospital staffed by the faculty of the School of Medicine, University of Liverpool. Medical students rotate year round and attend all emergency calls and teaching ward rounds are conducted every evening by the SHO or Registrar on call. The SHO's and Registrars were also required to conduct formal tutorials during regular hours once a week.
