William Arendell was a son of Bennett Arendell and Carey Cooper. William married Sarah Jane "Sally" Brown and together they had Martin E. Arendell, Richard Lewis Arendell, Williford Arendell, George W. Arendell, and Lucy S. Arendell.

Sarah Jane had a daughter Serelda Brown before her marriage to William Arendell. Mr. Arendell raised Serelda as one of his own, though she never took his last name. Serelda's biological father remains unknown.
