The Barker Plantations in South Carolina
c. 1770 to Civil War , Old Barnwell District, Sycamore, SC
“Sycamore” Plantation was built by Captain William Barker two miles south of the town of Sycamore, South Carolina, on both sides of Hwy US 321 at what is known as “Tuten’s Pond”. The plantation stayed in the Barker family for seven generations. At the time of the Civil War it consisted of 4,000 acres primarily used to raise cotton. General Sherman used the house to stay on his march to Columbia and burned the house as he left. The land was purchased by Robert Connelly in 2005 who is the last known owner. (Information from Michael Dyches, a resident of Allendale County which was known as “Old Barnwell District” during the 1800’s.)

The Barkers were known to own “Crane Savannah” Plantation (also burned by Sherman) which was to the north of the town of Sycamore, as well as at least one home near Charleston. It seems Captain Barker had the misfortune of having all his property located in Sherman’s path.
