I, William Berry of the County of Hawkins and State of Tennessee, being of sound mind and perfect memory, considering the uncertainty of this mortal life and being of sound mind, blessed be God for the same do make and publish this my last Will and Testament in manner and form following, that is to say: First my debts to be paid. Then one dollar unto my daughter Elizabeth Walker; one dollar to my daughter Rachael; one dollar to Sarah (Mulhel?); one dollar to my son John; one dollar to my son Thomas; one dollar to my son William; one dollar to my daughter Mary; one dollar to my son Francis; one dollar to my daughter Hannah. My will is that my wife Suanne shall have all the household and kitchen furniture for to do with as she thinks proper at her death, and my will is that Benoni Morlan shall have my land for taking care of me and my wife as long as we live, and my will is that my wife shall have the use of the farming tools and all the stock after my death as long as she lives. I do make and ordain Benoni Morlan to be my whole and sole Executor of this my last Will and Testament. I do hereby disannual all wills former and testaments, wills, bequests ratifying and confirming this and no other to be my last Will and Testament. Wendell Berry is a descendant of a BERRY family from Hawkins Co., Tennessee and makes the statement (my paraphrase): “William Berry and his son, Thomas, came down the Holston and settled in (Hawkins) Tennessee. His father was “John Berry who came to America with his brother James and settled in Augusta County, Virginia.” There are NO sources for these statements. It is most probably oral family history, or it is possible that it is Hobert T. Berry’s speculation. Hobert T. Berry (1930-2002) was a long-time Augusta BERRY researcher who was in contact with Wendell & Laura Berry. From many phone and mail contacts with Hobert, I know that he always considered it very likely that the Hawkins BERRYs descended from William Berry (d. 1823) were connected to the Augusta BERRYs. No documented information to connect ‘this’ William Berry with the Augusta Co., Virginia BERRYs has yet been found. Y-DNA testing now shows that descendants of Thomas Berry (m. Hannah Day) match the Augusta BERRYs on 36/37 and 34/37 markers. This proves a familial relationship between Augusta & Hawkins, but exactly how they connect is unresolved. It is presumed that Thomas Berry (m. Hannah Day) was a son of this William Berry/Sueann Unknown.
